The Importance of Being Earnest
Oscar Wilde's famous work, The Importance of Being Earnest, will be showing at Smock Alley Theatre from 3rd-22nd August!
A trivial comedy for serious people, The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s final work, has some of the most sparkling verbal wit ever put to paper. Satirising the shallow and superficial Victorian social conventions of his day Wilde’s observations are as relevant today in our modern society obsessed with filtered selfies, status updates and celebrity worship. As Lady Bracknell notes “We live, I regret to say, in an age of surfaces.”
Brilliant, inventive, witty and absolutely hilarious, Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, is probably his greatest achievement. Regarded as the most perfect comedy in the English language, don’t miss out this Summer on a rollicking rollercoaster of romance, wit and earnestness. As Algernon quips, “I don’t play accurately – anyone can play accurately – but I play with wonderful expression.”
August 3rd – 22nd in The Main Space at 7:30pm. Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30pm.
