Smock Alley Theatre presents Christmas Fayre
For one day only on Sunday December 14th, Smock Alley Theatre will open its doors for a spellbinding seasonal celebration with a little of something for everyone.
The first ever Smock Alley Christmas Fayre will see the theatre’s spectacular Banquet Hall brimming with festive market stalls selling everything from crafts and jewellery to clothing and books, the perfect place to find that last minute gift or to treat yourself to a mince pie, mulled wine and other homemade goodies. Occupying a central position at the heart of Temple Bar’s Old City area, the Christmas Fayre is a rare opportunity for Smock Alley to join forces with neighbouring shops and the Designer Mart on Cow’s Lane, unfailingly bustling outside its back doors each and every Saturday.
There will be plenty to occupy younger members of the family too, with readings by lamplight on the hour and screenings of festive film favourites in the theatre’s Main Space. ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ will delight children of all ages, while all-time classic ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ never fails to bring a warm and cosy feeling to even the most wintery of settings. There’ll even be a visit from the man himself, Santa Claus, who’ll be dropping in to say hello to all the kids who've been nice this year. All this will be set to a sparkling seasonal soundtrack with a selection of Christmas songs and carols performed by Smock Alley’s ensemble-in-residence, Tonnta Music.
The choice to use the old spelling for the Smock Alley Christmas Fayre is just a small nod and a wink to the remarkable history of the building. Long before it was known as St. Michael and John’s Church, Smock Alley was originally opened in 1662 as the first Theatre Royal in Dublin and is now one of the most important sites in European theatre history. Since reopening as Dublin’s oldest newest theatre in 2012 after extensive renovation, Smock Alley has once again become a mainstay of local arts and culture, playing host to some of the city’s best loved festivals, theatre and music performances as well as providing a beautiful and unique setting for a growing number of bespoke weddings and events.
